Church of the Holy Transfiguration in Kitchener celebrated its 85th anniversary.
“The pysanky is a masterpiece of love.”
On April 9th a Pysanky workshop was held at the Ukrainian Catholic Centre (15 Michael St., Kitchener). This was sponsored by the Kitchener Branch of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada in affiliation with the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Transfiguration of Kitchener, ON.
There was a good representation of children including some from a Ukrainian language class, teenagers and adults. Many beautiful and interesting pysanky were decorated under the guidance of Maria Bandura . Some very beautiful and delicate designs were produced by several ladies that were truly works of art.
The Ukrainian tradition of decorating eggs at Easter has been passed down from mother to daughter for many generations and the more daughters in the house the more pysanky were produced. The eggs were blessed at church on Easter Sunday and then given to family members and respected members and friends in the community. A bowl full of pysanky was kept in every home (and still is today) not only as a colorful display, but also as protection from all dangers.
A special thank you to Maria Bandura and Mary-Ann Oshukany for their hard work in setting up this workshop, with all the colorful dyes, styluses, beeswax, etc.
A very bountiful lunch was also provided and was enjoyed by everyone, especially by the young children.
Thank-you to George Onyschuk who had the difficult job of removing the inside of the eggs and heating them to melt all the wax from the shell. This allowed the true beauty of the pysanky to shine through.
Thank-you also to our Pastor, Rev. Volodymyr Yanishevsky for his support and encouragement in making this a celebration of community, family, friends and fun.

Щоб гідно і почесно відзначити цей день і подяку Господу Богу за всі ласки і дари у Соборі Успення Пресвятої Богородиці буде відслужена Архиєрейська подячна Літургія, яку очолить Преосященний Владика Кир Стефан Хміляр, Єпарх Торонта і Східньої Канади, з участю духовенства і гостей в неділю 19-го червня 2011 року о годині 11-ій, а о год. 1:30 по полудні Урочистий бенкет у церковній залі. Кошт білета на бенкет $100 від особи, $50 від дітей до 12-ти років. This year, we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the priesthood of Rt. Rev. Dr. Roman Pankiw, Dean of theCentralGTA, who was ordained on 6 July 1986. To properly honor and celebrate this day and thank God for all His graces and gifts, a Pontifical Divine Liturgy of thanksgiving will be celebrated at the church of The Dormition of the Mother of God in Mississauga, on Sunday June 19th 2011 at 11:00am. The main celebrant will be Most Rev. Bishop Stephen Chmilar, Eparch of Toronto and Eastern Canada, with the participation of parish and guest clergy. Following the Divine Liturgy, at 1:30 pm, a Gala Banquet and reception will be held in the Parish Hall. Cost of banquet tickets is $100 per person, $50 for children 12 years and under. За проханням і рішенням звітньо - виборних зборів 22-го травня 2010 року Божого координаційно - виконавча рада " Четвертої хвилі" звернулася до Преосвященнійшого Владики Кир Стефана Хміляра, про призначення отця пароха Романа Паньківа, декана Торонтонського, духовним дорадником - капеляном Міжнародної Організації Українських Громад " Четверта хвиля."
Владика Кир Стефан відповів на прохання.
"З великою радістю я прочитав Вашого листа, в якому Ви звертаєтесь з просьбою назначити Всесвітлішого о. декана Романа Паньківа духовним капеляном Міжнародної Організації Українських Громад " Четверта хвиля". Ваша організація є направду благословенням для нашої Єпархії і мене духовно піднесло, що Ви зврнулися з проханням про призначення капеляна. Тимже Ви включаєтеся у довгу традицію співпраці Церкви із Народом, яка почалася за часів о. Маркіяна Шашкевича. Назначуючи о. Романа Вашим капеляном, я покладаю на Отця великі сподівання. Співпрацюючи з о. Романом Паньківим через довгі роки я був свідком, яким чутливим є отець для потребуючих помочі наших вірних четвертої хвилі, тих яких св. Євангеліє називає найменшими Господнього Царства. В часі моєї довголітньої співпраці з отцем, я був збудований прикладом скромности, жертвенности, співчуття і зрозуміння, які отець виявляв до наших вірних, а зокрема до тих, які недавно прибули до Канади. Отець Роман не жалів і не жаліє часу і труду, щоб послужити тим, які звертаються до Нього в потребі.
При цім хочу наголосити ревне дбання і старання отця Романа, про це, щоб наша підростаюча молодь виростала на свідомих і побожних синів і дочок Української Церкви і Українського Народу. Отець Роман доложив багато зусиль, щоб цілоденна школа св. Софії мала належно розвинуту душпастирську програму праці із нашими дітьми і щоб був близький звязок і співпраця між школою і парохією Собору Успення Пресвятої Богородиці в Міссіссаґа. Отож я є переконаний і вірю, що о. Роман Паньків працюватиме для того, щоби духовні перли і самоцвіти нашої української духовної церковної і народної традиції були сприйняті і розвивалися в серцях нашої молоді і всіх людей.
Нехай Всещедрий і Предобрий Господь Спаситель благословить надалі діло рук Ваших.

Pysanka – Ukrainian Easter Tradition

A pysanka is a Ukrainian Easter egg, decorated using beeswax and colorful dyes.
On March 25th a “Pysanka Party” was held at the Ukrainian Catholic Centre (15 Michael St., Kitchener). This was sponsored by the Ukrainian Catholic Womens’ League of Canada in affiliation with the Ukrainian Catholic Church of The Transfiguration (131 Victoria St. S.) Children from a Ukrainian school, parishioners, families and friends attended the workshop.
Two artisans, Mary-Ann Oshukany and Maria Bandura, were on hand to give instruction and advice to all who needed help. Many beautiful pysanky were produced showing the variety of traditional motifs, symbols and colours used in this ancient art. The children were very enthusiastic and despite a few broken eggs they produced very colorful and imaginative images on their pysanky.
The symbolism used on pysanky is taken from many areas, Christianity, flowers, fruit, animals, etc. There are several thousand different motifs in Ukrainian folk design and their interpretations differ from region to region. A bowl full of pysanky was always kept in every home. It made a colorful display and was considered protection from all dangers.
The party concluded with a bountiful lunch. It was a day of celebration of community, family, friendship and FUN.

Also thanks to George Onyschuk who put a final polish on every pysanka. We also thank Father Volodymyr Yanishevsky, our pastor, for his support of this annual event. Because of the enthusiastic response to this workshop we will be holding it again next year. It is usually held a few weeks before Easter.
